Letter tot he editor: Boswell's legacy tarnished by Iraq-war vote
The Des Moines Regsiter - Letter to the editor
One cannot help but wonder why Leonard
Boswell is running for a seventh term. He could
have retired after six terms and allowed us to
celebrate the positive things he has done.
At the March 18 Polk County Central
Committee meeting, he recounted a conversation
with his daughter. She had asked him why,
instead of retiring and basking in his history
of public service, he chose to be a candidate
again. Pointing to his grandchildren, he
answered, "For them."
Supporting an unjust, pre-emptive war and
saddling future generations with a staggering
debt is a horrible legacy to leave one's
grandchildren. Among progressives, Boswell is
classified a Bush Democrat.
For the sake of my grandchildren, I am
ready to grant a deserved retirement to
Congressman Boswell. Ed Fallon, a real Democrat
in the Paul Wellstone tradition, will be a
strong and principled colleague for Iowa
Congressmen Bruce Braley and David
Loebsack.
- Chet Guinn, Des Moines.
